Happy Nowruz to one and all!
Happy first day of Spring...may the New Year bring you health, prosperity and peace.
The Spring Equinox is here and Persians around the world celebrate it as their New Year with several traditions such laying the Haft Sin table, handing out new money and coins to the younger people in the family, and wearing new dresses/clothes. Sounds like fun? well it certainly is a lot of fun with many festivities going on for days..
I was born in Tehran, Iran and I observe the New Year ceremony every year (well at least I try to!) by having fun setting my own Haft Sin table (click on the title link above for more info on the Haft Sin table). I only lived in Iran until I was 9 years old..but my memories are very vivid and I feel very connected to the Iranian land and traditions (mainly the non-Islamic traditions such as the Nowruz). I have happy and fond memories of families getting together for the Eid Nowruz, laughing and celebrating and eating rice with herbs and fish..(another traditional food eaten on the New Year). There was always excitement permeating the air with the buildup to the Persian New Year and the feeling of fresh new beginnings with the coming of Spring.
This year, being in Canada, I improvised and used a couple of non-traditional pieces on my table..such as stones. We have to lay the table using seven symbolic pieces that begin with the letter "S" in Persian.
The painting featured in the picture is by FEAMAP artist Mehri Azam Zanganeh who also happens to be my mother http://www.mehriazamzanganeh.com/ The painting is titled "Sunset"
